I don't think anyone cares about the "source code" of the document in the future. At least I didn't need to submit it to the university. You just need the PDF to be readable in the future.

PDF is a binary format that is difficult to parse
  • depending on whether it needs to be published on doi or whatever
  • its a very complex format too, perfectly reasonable that published documents shouldn't only be in that
  • most of those "publishing" websites render from latex into various formats
  • but yes that study is flawed, because its not users creating their own content
  • its literally being told to reproduce some document provided to them
  • which means the whole "speed" thing is kinda moot
  • because nobody publishes a study which is just plagerism basically lol
  • * because nobody publishes a study which is just plagiarism basically lol
  • but it does depend on the complexity of the document, purpose, and where it's going to end up
  • i think that is something to be considered
  • the comments there were overall critical of the study
  • except for the couple of short ones from lazy word users who were crying about how they had to use latex at some point
  • and seeking self validation from it
  • tbh though if the document doesn't have a heap of complex math that makes it even easier to use latex
  • that's like the most time consuming part, or node graphs

  • ah, good catch. Yeah, that definitely doesn't test what they were claiming to test then. I also agree with your claims regarding the usefulness of LaTeX when writing math equations. From experience trying to manage complex mathematical equation in Word (or similar document editors) is basically impossible, while in LaTeX, it is incredibly easy (by comparison). While graphs are definitely easier to make in LaTeX and more reproducible, I do wish there were an easier GUI way to create them because trying to figure out Tikz is kind of a pain 😅.

as that last reply pointed out "a two page letter sure", but a 100 page thesis... use latex.
  • word has got a lot better with math equations, i think it supports latex now too
  • but back in the day they used to get you to buy mathtype addon
  • and it always looked weird
  • exaCORE
    do they have aligning support?

  • aligning of formulas?
  • i do agree, tikz is kinda a pain
  • but it's not even a feature in word so
  • you'd have to do it in something else and import it as a picture in word

    Difficulty connecting to TOR

Is anyone else having difficulty connecting to TOR? I am using version 12.5.6 on Windows 11 and have never had any issues connecting to TOR before today (did not try to connect during the last couple of days, though). When I click "Connect", the window says "Establishing a Connection", but no 'status bar' shows up at the top. After some time, I am offered the option to "Try a Bridge", but that doesn't help either. I have no issues connecting on Android.

  • Maybe your Guard-Node has connection issues.
  • Your Guard-Node is the Tor Relay-Node, which you are directly connected to.
Guard-nodes are supposed to be swapped out only very rarely and they are usually rather stable.
IIRC if you wait long enough Tor Browser should either pic a new Guard node automatically or offer you the option to request a new one.

While this is good news, I’m more concerned that it was even possible to make a release to the general public without first running a VirusTotal.com check. This meant that for an entire weekend users were left in uncertainty. I think that from now on ALL releases should be accompanied by a VirusTotal check, so that anyone downloading the software can see for themselves if any virus checker flags it, (at least at the time of its release).

! Sorry, could have checked torproject.org myself :D. But just came across a reddit as well discussing the issue. I guess I'll just wait a bit and see if they distribute an update? Or maybe it'll be unflagged? o.O

@bee posted in What are the threats of using stock Android OS?
Before really getting into privacy this year, I purchased a new phone (Samsung S23). Sadly, I am unable to install GrapheneOS on it now, so I was wondering what the risks are of using the stock OS over something like GrapheneOS. What are some steps I can take to increase my privacy, and what are the threats I face using the stock One UI? So far, I have uninstalled anything I do not need, I am us...

@Rhombus posted in Are there any free, private, and secure collaborative to-do list applications?
I’m looking for a to-do list application that allows for collaboration between multiple users. I prefer something cross-platform, but at the very least it has to work on Android. When searching for some options, I’ve only heard of proprietary apps like Todoist which aren’t secure as they don’t support E2EE. Are there any free (both libre and gratis), secure, privacy-respecting to-do list applicat...

    Hi!
I got a question regarding the security/ sandboxing of apps using Linux:
Is it better to use flatpaks from flathub or to use the normal package and 'firejail' them?
